The two men who burnt a 21-year-old-man to death in Auckland, New Zealand and went on a spending spree with his life savings have been given life sentences with a minimum non‑parole period of 17 years in prison.
According to Radio NZ, Shivneel Kumar and Bryne Permal were found guilty of the Shalvin Prasad’s murder in a crime that the Crown had said was driven by money.
In her victim impact statement, Prasad's mother, Shami Prasad, said the trial was torture and the whole family was having counselling sessions.
Shalvin Prasad's body was found in smouldering scrubland in south Auckland in January 2013.
Prasad withdrew $30,000 from his bank account on the day he went missing.
