Water Authority of Fiji has changed a total of 1,700 ceased and aged water meters and upgraded 2,900 residential water meters for the 2017-2018 financial year.
During the same period, a total of 203 commercial and industrial meters have also been replaced.
The Authority says these customers will now receive billing that is fair and based on the accurate and actual reading of their meters.
It says meter replacement works are an on‑going process for the next two years with the priority directed towards the replacement of commercial and industrial water meters.
Over the next two years, the Authority is working towards replacing approximately 15,000 aged and ceased meters operating in the Authority’s meter fleet.
The Authority says with the annual capital funding from the government, they have sufficient meters available and are prioritizing the purchasing of residential water meters.
The Authority says the water meters that are found to be ceased, cannot be read, so estimations are provided for the customer and in these cases, the replacement program is used to replace meters so that, in future, these customers will receive billing that is fair and based on the accurate and actual reading of their meters.
