166 cases of Leptospirosis have been recorded as at 30th April this year.
Health Minister Jone Usamate says there were 66 cases in early April.
Usamate says people who may be affected are advised to seek medical assistance from their health care provider immediately.
The illness lasts from a few days to 3 weeks or longer and without treatment, recovery may take several months.
According to the Ministry, untreated cases can progress to a more severe and potentially fatal stage.
The Minister says the risk of acquiring leptospirosis can be greatly reduced by not swimming in water that may be contaminated with animal urine, or eliminating contact with potentially infected animals.
