150 people from Tailevu and Naitasiri will benefit from a USD$300,000 agricultural initiative that will enable them to process and market their own grown local food products.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture today held a workshop with rural farmers and local organisations with the theme - Increased capacity of rural communities to process and market local food.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation has given funding which will cover the cost of consultants, raw material, basic processing equipment, development of training manuals and basic refurbishment of processing equipment.
One of the participants in the meeting, Analaisa Nakudua of Naboulini whose husband is a farmer says farming is their livelihood and she is eager to gain skills from the training that will be provided to help her community earn money.
The organisation will be working with 3 existing community centres in Naboulini, Verata and the Homes of Hope.
Oraganisations like FMF and National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprise Development will provide expertise in processing and marketing food, and business management.
