The Permanent Secretary for Environment, Joshua Wycliffe officially handed over 136 Tabua to the Ministry of Itaukei Affairs this afternoon.
At the official hand over at the Ministry of Itaukei Affairs Conference Room, Wycliffe highlighted that the 136 Tabua is from the 146 tabua that were brought to Fiji from New Zealand on the 29th of May 2017.
He also highlighted that the Ministry of Environment would keep 10 of the Tabua for the purpose of research, education and awareness requirements.
The Tabua were officially received by the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Itaukei Affairs, Naipote Katonitabua before being handed to the current Permanent Secretary, Meleti Bainimarama.
Bainimarama revealed that 136 Tabua will go towards the establishment of a Tabua Shop that will be run by the Ministry of Itaukei Affairs.
He adds that the Tabua Shop will ensure that Itaukei tradition and culture is protected and this will also help address the issue of fake Tabua.
Bainimarama says this will also ensure that processes are established to control and monitor issues related to this important traditional artifact.
