A total of 1,257 diabetes related amputations have been recorded at the CWM hospital alone from 2012 to 2013.
Diabetes Fiji Chairman Dr. Wahid Khan said diabetes has increased from about 4% in 1985 to 16% in 2002 and 30% in 2011.
Khan said in Fiji a person with diabetes loses a foot from untreated infection every 12 hours.
He said they are increasing the awareness among nurses in giving them the right tools to recognize early problems for diabetic foot.
Khan said every diabetic patient has been taught on how to look after their feet and they are trying to get diabetics to eat healthy and exercise.
Diabetes Fiji is currently conducting a workshop to eliminate diabetes.
The workshop is being attended by health officials in the Central Division.
