1,157 students moved out of the education system last year either through migration, death or have dropped out.
Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy told parliament that data shows the dropout numbers were recorded highest for Suva, Nausori, Lautoka, Nadi and Yasawa district between 2015 to 2016.
He says the four most common reasons of students dropping out was the lack of parental or guardian engagement to motivate children to attend school, family issues, students losing interest in school work due to factors such as peer pressure and special needs children who are regularly sick.
Reddy adds that to assist students who have dropped out, education officers will be attending to individual students and will be enrolling each and every one of them in the school of their choice within their zone.
He says the Ministry staff will be working during the school holidays and approach the parents of these students.
