A total of 10,000 students out of the 200,000 student population in the country are absent on any school day.
This worrying statistic has been revealed by the Minister for Education Dr. Mahendra Reddy during the launch of Pillar 4 of the Education Reforms Parental Engagement at Rishikul Sanatan College.
Dr. Reddy says the schools and the Ministry must work with the parents.
He says no government policies will make any difference unless they also hold themselves more accountable.
Dr. Reddy says the 2015 National Substance Abuse and Advisory Council Report also reveals that a total of 1,796 offences were committed by the students last year.
He says this is affecting their overall performance at school.
Meanwhile, more than 300 parents and guardians attended the launch.
