The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre welcomes the Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho’s commitment to address violence against women, young girls and child abuse.
Coordinator Shamima Ali says they are looking forward to working with him to address some of these issues.
Ali says the Police are in the front line when dealing with victims of violence most of whom are women and she hopes that women will have more success in accessing police services when making reports.
She says they have encouraged the Acting Commissioner of Police to take into account the recent Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission report on alleged brutality by police and military.
She adds they also urge the Acting Commissioner of Police to continue investigations into cases of alleged police brutality including excessive force used by members of the security forces.
Ali says it is the duty of the Police to bring perpetrators to justice and not to take the law into their own hands.
