A 68-year-old man has been ordered to pay a fine of $4,000 by the Savusavu Magistrates Court after being found in possession of Arms and Ammunition without Licence.

Nico Kuyt was convicted of one count of possession of arms and ammunition without licence, import of arms and ammunition without licence and failure to declare the importation of arms and ammunition.

The man pleaded guilty to the offence.

On 25 December last year, the man was found with a pistol at his house in Savusavu.

It was heard in court that the accused brought these arms and ammunitions on his arrival in Fiji in 2009.

Magistrate Cama Tuberi says the aggravating factor is that the man has been offending for about 8 years.

He said in mitigation it was submitted that the last time the man used the ammunition was 35 years ago and he had forgotten about it until 2013 when he unpacked it.
