While the government’s stand remains that all school head appointments will be based on merit, not based on religion or race, the Catholic Church in Fiji says that they will now have a meeting this Thursday to discuss the issue regarding non-Catholics getting school head appointments in Catholic schools.
Although comments have been made that you cannot appoint based on religion, Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says that they believe that their stand is not discriminatory as Catholic schools have a special character.
Archbishop Chong says while they support the philosophy of Open Merit Recruitment System, it lacks faith in the system. He says faith should be one of the criteria when making school head appointments for Faith Based schools.
We are still awaiting comments from Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar. She is yet to respond to our questions that were sent yesterday.
