Turaga na Tui Noco Ratu Isoa Damudamu who came up with the idea of accepting the descendants of the Girmitiyas today spoke about why they came up with the name “Luvedra na Ratu” for the Indo Fijians in the country.
He says back in the day when they were young, a well-known shopkeeper in Nasali called, Ram Karan used to sell sweets with his son at the school.
The Tui Noco said that one day Ram Karan had an argument with a man from Lomanikoro, and people from Noco were present and watching the argument.
The man from Lomanikoro then challenged Ram Karan to a fist fight but he told the man from Lomanikoro that he was more worried about what the people of Noco will tell the Ratu from Noco.
The fight ended at that moment as the man from Lomanikoro was ashamed of what had happened.
Ratu Isoa says this is the reason why they decided to give the name Luvedra Na Ratu to all Indo Fijians.
