“We need to teach our children, nieces and nephews who are in primary school or still at home the basic respect for our elders.”
Those were the words of Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa who was the chief guest at today’s celebration of International Day of Older Persons at the Samabula Senior Citizens Home.
Vuniwaqa stressed the importance of today’s celebration which is to respect our parents, grandparents and the elder citizens of this country and to appreciate their contribution to society.
She says Fiji is a multi-cultural country and with having different cultures and traditions, one thing all these cultures and traditions have in common is the basic respect we have for our elders.
Vuniwaqa also spoke strongly on the theme of today’s celebrations, “Taking a Stand Against Ageism.”
54 senior citizens of the Samabula Senior Citizens Home were part of the celebration today.
