Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy

Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy has revealed that some students around the country will resume their first school term classes in tents from next week.

Reddy says that all schools will be open for normal classes except for Madhuvani Primary School which is still under construction.

Students of Madhuvani Primary School will be attending nearby schools.

He says some schools that were damaged during Tropical Cyclone Winston are still under construction while construction for some have not started yet.

However, Reddy says classes will be normal for all of these schools.

Reddy adds they will be providing new tents to some schools with the support of UNICEF as some tents are damaged.

The Minister also stresses that people should understand that these schools were constructed 40 to 50 years ago by the members of the community and at that particular time they did not use a particular building code.

He says over this long period these schools have been subjected to many cyclones and bad weather and they have weak structures.

He says a lot of contracts have been given for the construction of the schools.

Reddy highlights that all construction work in the affected schools around the country will be completed by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, Reddy says that construction work at the Queen Victoria School has been completed.

The first school term starts next Tuesday.
