Members of the public are requested to take alternative routes into Suva this morning as parts of roads in the capital city will be temporarily closed for the United Nations Peacekeepers Memorial Day.
The main road from the Suva Flea Market to Civic Centre will be closed from 8:45am to 10am to allow for the march procession.
A portion of Vuya Road near Battery Road at Nasese will be temporarily closed from 10:30am to 12pm.
The Ministry of Defence, National Security and Immigration will pay tribute to all Fijian peacekeepers as we mark International Day of Peacekeepers today.
Permanent Secretary Osea Cawaru says it is only appropriate to honour and pay tribute to those that have paid the ultimate price for peace in all our Peacekeeping Missions that the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force have actively participated in.
Cawaru says 54 Fijian peacekeepers have lost their lives while serving with the United Nations and Multinational Observers in Sinai.
He says it would be also timely to remember and pray for our current peacekeepers serving around the globe who are now faced with complex, dynamic and difficult situations that have become the realities of contemporary peacekeeping.
976 Fijian Peacekeepers are currently serving with the United Nations and Multinational Observers in Sinai.
Cawaru says the Republic of Fiji Military Forces formal participation in Peacekeeping Operations commenced with the 1FIR troops deployment to United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in 1978 to 2012 then was redeployed again in February 2015.
He adds it was followed by the continued deployment of 2FIR troops to Multinational Observer Force in Sinai Desert, Egypt since 1982.
