Police will lay charges of negligence against parents if they have evidence to prove that there was parental negligence.

Investigations are underway in relation to two cases where an eleven month old baby died in Labasa last week and a 1 year 11 month old toddler was found dead in the Rewa River last Saturday.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said investigators will have to look at the issue of negligence in these types of cases.

The parents in both cases have been interviewed.

Police are now awaiting the post mortem results before taking further steps.

The 11 month old baby boy drowned in a bucket of water in Labasa last Wednesday.

The baby was with the mother at home when the incident happened and the baby’s body was discovered by the father.

The father attempted to revive his son but this proved futile.

Investigations continue following the discovery of the body of the one year eleven month old boy in the Rewa River on Saturday.

The toddler was missing from his home since Friday afternoon.

Police say the boy was playing with his friends at his home in Baulevu.

When the search was conducted, the body was discovered in the Rewa River.

The toddler's house is located near the river.

Police Commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho is calling on parents and guardians to be more vigilant in taking care of their children as cases regarding parental negligence have recently increased.
