Parents in flood affected areas to use discretion when sending children to school

Parents are to use their own discretion to send their children to school for those affected by flood waters from last night.

This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Education as a Heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji.

The Nadi Weather Office says that an active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remains slow moving over the Fiji group and is expected to affect the group till later tomorrow night.

A flood warning still remains in force for the low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent and downstream of Vatukacevaceva Station down to Rakiraki Town.

A flood warning is also in force for low lying areas, small streams and areas downstream of Toge Station to Ba Town, low lying areas, small streams and areas downstream of Navolau Station.

A flood alert still remains in force for low lying areas and small streams adjacent and downstream of Keyasi Station, Nairukuruku Station and downstream of Nasivi.

The Nadi weather office has also confirmed that water levels at Vatukacevacea Station was at 0.97m at 4am which is 0.52m below warning level and decreasing.

At Toge station water levels were at 3.56m at 4am which is 0.04m below alert level and decreasing.

Levels at Ba at FSC Mill was at 4.34m at 4am which is 0.84m above warning level and decreasing.

At the Keyasi Station water levels were at 3.36m at 4am which is 0.64m below alert level and decreasing, levels at Nairukuruku station were at 3.36m which is 0.01m above alert level and decreasing while levels at the Navolau Station were at 9.59m which is 1.59m above warning level and increasing.

Police have confirmed reports of flash flooding is being received from certain parts of the Western Division.

Police Commander West SSP Abdul Khan says that they have had to ask vehicle owners not to cross flooded areas and tell children not to swim during this time.

Members of the public are also requested to call the Western Division Command Center on 9905457 if they require any assistance.
