PM makes call to other countries to sign Paris Agreement with Fiji

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama made a call to other countries to sign the Paris Agreement with Fiji to help small Pacific islands adapt to the rising of sea level and extreme weather event that are associated with climate change.

Fiji joined 175 other countries who signed the Paris Agreement, but was one of only 15 countries to deposit the instruments of ratification.

Bainimarama also stressed that after Tropical Cyclone Winston, the Fijian people now know more about the effects of climate change.

The United States Secretary of State, Senator John Kerry, assured the meeting that the U.S. will ratify the Paris Agreement in 2016.

A number of other countries including Australia, Canada, Argentina, Mali, Norway and the Maldives also gave assurances that they would ratify the agreement.
