Minister for Education Rosy Akbar says they are determined to ensure that no child will sit in a tent and study this year.

Akbar says she has visited schools in Tavua, Rakiraki and Ba and assurance has been given by the contractors that classrooms would be ready by the start of the new school year.

She made this clear while speaking to school heads of primary and secondary schools as well as technical colleges.

Term 1 of the 2019 School Year will start next Monday.

There has been progress in the reconstruction phase in Ra through the Adopt a School Programme.

In May last year, through the Adopt a School programme 10 schools damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston in Ra were reopened.

They are Madhuvani Sangam Primary School, Bureiwai District School, Bucalevu Primary School, Namuaniwaqa Village School, Liwativale Primary School, Nasau District School, Tokaimalo District School, Bayley Memorial Primary School, Navunibitu Catholic Primary School and Naroko Primary School.

Tropical Cyclone Winston caused havoc in Fiji on 7th February 2016.

We have asked the Ministry of Education about the number of schools damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston that are yet to be reconstructed.

They are yet to respond.

Fijivillage has also asked the Ministry of Education to provide the number of schools which still had students studying in tents at the end of the school year last year.

They are also yet to respond to those queries.
