Police are currently investigating the disappearance of more than half a million dollars from the accounts of the Fiji Law Society.
Chief of Intelligence and Investigations ACP Biu Matavou says he cannot reveal more details but they are conducting a full investigation.
We have also asked the current executives of the Fiji Law Society.
They have confirmed that the funds went missing from late 2009 and 2010.
The Society says they are keeping a close watch on the Police investigation.
They say from the Police reports to their office, the Society is hopeful that Police should complete the investigation soon and proceed to laying criminal charges.
Simultaneously, the Society has instructed lawyer, Devanesh Sharma to proceed with civil proceedings for the recovery of the missing funds.
The Fiji Law Society says despite the substantial missing funds, they are most grateful that the Society has a very efficient council who have worked together with its members, pooling their resources to ensure that the statutory objectives are fulfilled.
Membership of the Law Society is now voluntary compared to the previous legislation where membership was compulsory.
The Society used to issue legal practicing certificates to the lawyers but it is now issued by the Chief Registrar under the Legal Practitioners Act.
