A 21-year-old man who broke into a 51-year-old woman’s house and raped her in July 2016, has been sentenced to 11 years and 10 months imprisonment.
It was heard in the Suva High Court that Kitione Vakadranu entered the house of the woman with a knife, while she was sleeping in her bedroom in the early hours of the morning.
Vakadranu placed a knife on her neck, threatened to kill her and then raped her.
He then threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident.
While sentencing Vakadranu, High Court Judge, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said that this was a pre-planned crime, committed at a time where the woman had no prospect of escaping or seeking help.
He says Vakadranu also used substantial amount of physical and psychological violence on the victim.
A non-parole period of 9 years and 10 months has been set.
