It is all about the money when it comes to rugby union and any chance of a Pacific Islanders team in the Super Rugby competition looks very slim at this stage.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Chairman of the Australian Rugby Union and the recent past Chairman of SANZAR, Michael Hawker said their main focus is to get teams from the Northern hemisphere involved to grow the revenue from the game.

Next year's Super Rugby competition will include a team from Japan, a team from Argentina and an additional team from South Africa.

Hawker said there are no plans at this stage to have a combined team from Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

But he said there could be a global club competition involving many teams in the future.

When asked on whether there is any chance of the Wallabies coming to Fiji or the Flying Fijians playing more test matches against the Wallabies, Hawker again said that it is about the money and new broadcast rights being negotiated may open up a few possibilities.

Hawker who is a former Wallaby was the guest speaker at the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Dinner at GPH last night.
