Police have confirmed that they are already investigating allegations of police brutality in Nadarivatu.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Itendra Nair says their Internal Affairs Unit is already investigating two reports lodged at the Tavua Police Station by the victims.
Nair says the Commissioner of Police has given his assurance that all complaints made against Police officers or services will be thoroughly investigated.
He says the Fiji Police Force is a transparent organisation and if and when an officer has committed a crime, they will be charged as highlighted by the statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Nair also says that their Internal Affairs Unit conducts the investigations fairly.
Lautoka lawyer and Fiji Labour Party’s Assistant General Secretary, Aman Ravindra Singh said in a press conference earlier today that he will file a complaint with the Police Commissioner by next Monday as he says he has a report of alleged Police brutality in Nadarivatu in January this year.
Singh is alleging that 9 Police Officers apprehended 9 youths at Waikubukubu Village and took them to Nadarivatu Community Police Post on January 26th this year.
He claims that the 9 youths were tortured by the Police Officers while they were seeking information on marijuana cultivation.
The Lautoka lawyer also claims that the officers also attempted to rape one of the youths.
Singh says he was alerted about it last Friday and he is taking the statements and photographs and getting all the medical reports ready.
He confirms that he will file the complaint by Monday.
Singh says they will also give the names of the Police Officers to Commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho.
He says what the Commissioner does after the complaint is his prerogative.
