Fiji Trades Union Congress National Secretary, Felix Anthony says he will not say anything at this stage on reports of a planned nationwide protest or strike by the FTUC next Friday.

When we contacted Anthony earlier, he said that he will comment later and did not want to say anything further.

He is in meetings today and FijiVillage will speak to him later today.

The Ministry of Education issued a circular earlier this month, saying that they have been alerted to the possibility of the FTUC conducting a nationwide protest on May 3rd that is in contravention of the relevant laws in Fiji.

In the circular, Permanent Secretary for Education, Alison Burchell says although this falls in the school holidays, any such protest will be unlawful, any participation in such protest will also be unlawful, any incitement or encouragement to participate in such protest will be an unlawful act, and if any Ministry employee participates in the proposed protest, having taken leave or being on school break, their participation will still be unlawful and may be subject to possible disciplinary action or other legal action under a relevant law.

Burchell says the Ministry remains committed to discussions with unions in good faith and to ensuring there is no disruption to services.
