The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is now in talks with the Ministry of Education to look for constructive ways to end bullying and corporal punishment in schools.
Fijivillage continues to receive information that bullying is prevalent in boarding schools and beatings are sometimes allegedly encouraged as a form of punishment by some teachers.
The commission has already received the complaint about the beatings at QVS.
Commission Director Ashwin Raj says while five students and a teacher have been charged with assault, this calls for a larger investigation on the prevalence of bullying in boarding schools.
Raj says he has spoken to the Minister for Education Doctor Mahendra Reddy about embedding human rights education into the school curriculum.
He says schools also need to develop a clear policy on bullying.
