Heated debate took place in parliament when members discussed the bill regarding the 2016 public holidays which included the new Constitution Day public holiday on the 7th of September.

Some of the opposition were shouting when the government side was making presentations.

The opposition stressed that they do not agree with the Constitution Day public holiday and asked that Fiji should bring back Ratu Sukuna Day.

Opposition MP, Kini Kiliraki also said that Fiji needs a public holiday for the itaukei.

Opposition MP, Viliame Gavoka also said that people will wear black armbands if Fiji has a Constitution Day.

Industry and Trade Minister, Faiyaz Koya said the constitution is for every citizen of Fiji.

Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum then raised a point of order saying that Opposition Whip, Ratu Isoa Tikoca was out of line in the side comments he was making.

Health Minister, Jone Usamate then said that the opposition should not degrade the constitution as they took their oaths under it.

Sayed-Khaiyum stressed that itaukei rights are well protected in the constitution.

The bill has been passed and Fiji will have the Constitution Day public holiday on September 7th next year.
