The new Australian High Commissioner to Fiji will start soon.
When questioned by Fijivillage, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirmed that talks have been held with the Fijian government and the new High Commissioner is ready to take up the appointment.
Bishop who met with the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola earlier today said with parliamentary democracy returning to Fiji, Australia will take steps to assist Fiji.
While Bishop is expected to meet other political figures in the country, she said the Multinational Observer Group found the September elections to be credible.
She said Australia was delighted with the conduct of the elections and they are looking forward to working with the Fijian government.
Bishop also said that all the sanctions against Fiji have been lifted.
This will also result in full defence cooperation and the commencement of the seasonal workers scheme.
A joint statement released by Fijian Foreign Minister, Ratu Inoke Kububola said Fiji and Australia are pleased to announce the exchange of High Commissioners.
The two ministers say reflecting on the return to a normal bilateral relationship, Fiji will conclude its selection of a High Commissioner to Australia shortly, while Margaret Twomey will soon take up the position of Australian High Commissioner to Fiji.
They have also announced the establishment of regular bilateral senior officials’ talks.
These will be an opportunity for Fiji and Australia to work together to address global security challenges, regional issues and strengthen the bilateral trade and investment relationship.
Fiji has also agreed to the New Colombo Plan which will see Australian undergraduates studying in Fiji.
Australia has announced the first group of successful students.
Ratu Inoke and Bishop say this will be a great experience for young people and help deepen the already strong people to people relationship between Australia and Fiji.
