Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge

The first phase of replacing the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge will commence in the 2017/2018 financial year.

The bridge had major issues last year and a lane had to be closed to conduct urgent repair works.

Fijivillage has asked what is the plan for the bridge as it is located on Queens Highway which is the only entry point into Suva along this highway from the west and the heavily populated areas like Lami and Delainavesi.

Acting CEO of the Fiji Roads Authority Robert Sen has confirmed that they are working with consultants to erect a modular bridge next to Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge during the next financial year which runs from August this year to end of July next year.

The next process will be to demolish the current bridge and then build the new bridge after confirming a design.

Sen also says that they will do some work on the Vugalei and Suvavou bridges.

The government has stressed that we always have to build better for the future.

The FRA had said earlier this year that it is planning to replace the Tamavua‑i‑wai Bridge in Lami with a four lane bridge.

With the increase in the number of vehicles and heavy loaded trucks constantly using Queens Highway, it has now become necessary for the FRA and other stakeholders to build or repair the bridges, and look for long term solutions.
