65 years after Fiji Airways first flight, our national airline continues to fly the Fiji flag with pride, connects our passengers to more places in the world, brings the world to our home, and soars with pride to a promising future.

Those are the words of Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen as the airline celebrated its 65th anniversary in Nadi today.

Viljoen gave credit to Fiji Airways founder Harold Gatty, a pioneering aviator, for taking the bold step to establish an airline in Fiji.

He says Gatty laid the foundation for what today is Fiji’s National Airline.

Viljoen also announced two major community projects today.

Their Wings of Hope charity will adopt two schools in Taveuni under the government’s Adopt-a-School programme, and assist them in their rebuilding efforts following Cyclone Winston.

These schools, which are listed under those up for adoption are South Taveuni Primary School and South Taveuni Secondary School.

The second initiative is about conservation and protection of Fiji’s environment.

In addition to their ongoing work with the Mamanuca Environment Society, Fiji Airways will plant one tree for every single international take‑off from Nadi International Airport by Fiji Airways aircraft.

This will amount to more than 3,000 trees planted in a year. The project will be known as ‘Every Take Off…One Tree’.

He also says that triumph has followed every challenge airline has faced.

Viljoen acknowledged the support and guidance of the government who have stood by the company through their toughest challenges, the commitment and dedication of the employees of Fiji Airways and the passion, support and the pride of the Fijian people.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Fiji 7s coach, Ben Ryan were also present at the anniversary.

Sayed-Khaiyum commended the word of Fiji Airways and also said that the government will always support the national airline.

The staff of Fiji Airways sang Isa Lei for Ryan and his wife, Natalie.

The Ryans leave Fiji later this week.
