A 33-year-old man has been charged for reckless or negligent acts under the Crimes Decree for allegedly failing to confine his dog which contributed to the death of a 12-year-old boy last Sunday in Navua.

The accused has also been charged for not having a proper dog license.

Police Director of Traffic Mahesh Mishra says the 66-year-old driver who is alleged to have hit the 12-year-old boy has been charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The 33-year-old dog owner and 66-year-old driver will be produced at the Suva Magistrates Court today.

Mishra is calling on animal owners to ensure their pets and livestock are confined at all times as this was a tragic accident that could have been avoided.

The 12-year-old boy of Tokotoko Navua passed away in the tragic accident in Navua Town on Sunday.

According to police, the boy was riding his bicycle towards Navua Town when a dog ran after him and in the process he swerved onto the road and collided with a vehicle.

Police say the driver also tried to swerve but could not avoid coming into contact with the boy who was being chased by the dog.
