“Doctors play a pivotal role in the delivery of medical services and the well being of our country.”
Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made this comment while speaking to the 92 new doctors that were inducted into Fiji’s health sector.
Sayed-Khaiyum also stressed to the newly inducted doctors the importance to communicate with each other as well as with their patients.
He says their patients are the reason the Ministry of Health and the professionals involved actually exist.
Sayed-Khaiyum also told the new doctors that to be able to respect the patient is just as crucial.
He also encouraged all the doctors about the need to have compassion as the medical field is a very personal profession, deals with people’s lives and with it comes great responsibility.
Sayed-Khaiyum also took out time to ask the newly inducted doctors about their experience during their internship.
They told the Attorney General about their experiences and challenges which included the shortage in basic medication and equipment.
Sayed-Khaiyum then told the new doctors that the issue with the shortage of medication and equipment is not because of the lack of government funds but the procurement process.
Sayed Khaiyum reminded them of previous cases where doctors were negligent on their part and has urged the newly inducted doctors to take on their new roles with passion.
The 92 new doctors have completed a one year internship at the three divisional hospitals in Fiji after their six years of study.
