An impression of The Grand.

The developer of the planned tallest building in Fiji and the South Pacific cannot use the word “Fijian” for the building.

Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has confirmed to Fijivillage that the application to use the word “Fijian” has been rejected.

Sayed-Khaiyum said the developer Vijay Sharma has been informed not to use the word for the building and he has accepted it.

Meanwhile, construction work on the building which is expected to be located in the heart of Suva has not started.

The 30-level tower, which they had earlier called Grand Fijian Suva during the launch, was supposed to include housing apartments, a hotel and spa.

It was to be located on the corner of Forster and Pratt Street.

It was announced during the launch of the multi-storey building project in Suva last year that the construction work was supposed to start two months ago and the building was expected to be completed by November next year.

Fijivillage has visited the site and noticed that the construction work has not started.

We have also called and emailed the designer Sharma Architects numerous times and have been advised that Vijay Sharma has been in meetings.

The estimated $110 million project will comprise of a car park, gymnasium, restaurants, coffee shops, conference room, spa, 60 suite hotel and 77 apartment units.

When contacted yesterday, the office said they are now calling the building “The Grand”.
