A 68-year-old man who sexually assaulted his 11-year-old grand daughter has been sentenced to 2 years and 5 months imprisonment.
The incident happened in Kadavu in 2017.
The maximum term for sexual assault is 10 years imprisonment.
While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera says the aggravating factors were that there was a breach of trust, the age difference was 57 years and that the man took advantage of the victims naivety and vulnerability.
It was heard in court that the man is remorseful for his actions and has offered a traditional apology to the complainant and her parents.
It was also heard in court that after that he moved to Suva and he did not apply for bail because he was filled with shame and remorse.
A non-parole period of 1 year and 8 months has been set.
