Five people were taken into Police custody for questioning on Tuesday and are likely to be charged for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband items into the Remand Center in Korovou.

The Fiji Corrections Service says the five people were caught on surveillance cameras that were being monitored by officers at the Remand Center.

Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Senior Superintendent Apimeleki Taukei says the two women and three men were visiting their relatives and spouses when they were caught suspiciously handing over the items by officers watching the CCTV cameras.

He says they were apprehended immediately and handed over to Police after questioning.

Taukei says the items found included marijuana and tobacco leaves.

He says this should serve as a deterrent to others who plan to indulge in similar activities.

Taukei confirms that dealing with contraband has always been a major challenge for the Fiji Corrections Service adding that these visitors do not realise that if caught, they could also find themselves behind bars.

Taukei is reminding all visitors to any Fiji Corrections Centers facility to refrain from bringing in prohibited items during their visits.

He adds that people must adhere to the visiting protocols in all Fiji Correction Service Centers as anyone found breaching these protocols will be dealt with according to the law.
