The 45-year-old mother who raped and sexually assaulted her 14-year-old daughter in Nasinu, has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.

Justice Salesi Temo sentenced the woman to 13 years in prison for one count of rape and 4 years imprisonment for one count of sexual assault.

Both sentences are to be served concurrently.

Justice Temo has set a non-parole period of 12 years.

This is the first ever case before the Fijian courts of a mother raping her daughter.

While sentencing the 45-year-old woman, Justice Temo told her that she is the girl’s biological mother and she breached the trust her daughter had in her.

Justice Temo says mothers are supposed to look after their daughters and counsel them to become good citizens of this country but she did the unthinkable.

Judge Temo told the mother that and I quote “You tread where even angels fear to tread” end quote.

He said that the woman should not complain as her liberty has been taken away to atone for her sins.

Justice Temo said that the woman had no regard for the rights of her daughter as a child and as a human being.

The matter was reported at Nakasi Police Station by the 14-year-old girl’s teacher.

The girl had told the teacher that her mother was raping her between 1st January to 5th July last year.
