About 44 families of Calia settlement in Navua are facing eviction by the new owners of the land and are defending their case in the Suva High Court.

The new owners Kelton Investment Limited has filed a case  seeking orders from the court for eviction as they have bought the piece of land from the previous owner.

The occupants are opposing eviction saying that the representative of previous owner Ken Ross verbally transferred the ownership of the subject land to the sitting tenants in the presence of government officials in 1995.

These families are claiming that they have been occupying this land for over 70 years.

The case has been adjourned to the 27th of next month.

The Acting Master of the High Court, Vishwa Sharma has given the families 14 days to state why they should not vacate the land.

Suva lawyer Anand Singh is representing Kelton Investment Limited however a spokesperson for the occupants Savenaca Siga has made an application in court to advocate on behalf of the residents.
