A 20 metre crack has been discovered along Edinburgh Drive in Suva after excavating about half a metre which has resulted in the closing of one lane of the road.

Fiji Roads Authority CEO Jonathan Moore says its contractors discovered the crack 2 days ago and the Authority is concerned that it is a precursor to a potentially major land slip which is a serious problem on Edinburgh Drive.

Moore says it is an old crack in the ground and a team has been sent to do measurements on the road to check on the level of movement and there has been no discernable movement over the last 24 hours.

He says depending on what the team discovers, the FRA may be able to open up the inside lane again.

He says if they find the road is moving, they will close the road and an action plan will be put in place for alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Moore says work on Stinson Bridge and Vatuwaqa Bridge is scheduled to be completed in June 2018.

He says it is very important to have these two major bridges operational as the FRA cannot go ahead with the work on their Suva Arterial Road Upgrading Project until the bridges are completed.

Moore says there are 23 roads in Suva under the project.

He also says that work on the road in Martintar, Nadi has been finished and the road from Nadi Airport to Wailoaloa will be opened tomorrow.

He says a lot of effort has been put into having the road ready to be opened tomorrow.
