The Government of Japan has yet again brought smiles to the faces of ordinary Fijians after they have agreed to fund three more projects that would ease the burden some Fijians carry.
The $569,003 assistance will go to the Labasa Town Council, Navuakece District School and Visama Village.
The Labasa Town Council will be getting a total of $221,033 for the provision of a nine tonne garbage compactor truck.
The Council has strived to provide excellent garbage collection services however, the demand has proven to be challenging for the Council’s limited manpower and garbage collection fleet.
The nine tonne compactor truck will improve the services of the Council by efficiently collecting kitchen and household waste in a timely manner.
Navuakece District School will receive up to $172,100 for the construction of three classrooms.
Navuakece District School serves the communities of Waitabolo, Nateru-mai, Waisere, Savuna and Nasa-ua. Currently, the school has 177 students.
At present, classrooms are shared between Year 1 and Year 2 students and between Year 7 and Year 8 students. This has led to students studying in an overcrowded environment which is not conducive to delivery of quality education.
Visama Village Development Committee will receive $175,870 for the construction of a foot bridge in Visama Village which is located on the outskirts of Nausori Town.
The 300 villagers and nearby community residents have been using coconut trunks as a foot crossing for several years where students, the elderly and those needing medical attention such as pregnant ladies use this impromptu bridge on a daily basis.
All three projects will be made possible through the Japanese Government’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects Programme.
