The Fiji Womens Crisis Centre believes that legalizing prostitution will never solve the problem as it believes that people who are part of the sex trade are not in it by choice.
While Coordinator Shamima Ali said prostitution should be decriminalized, she said legalizing it is not the answer.
She said at this stage, the only step that should be taken is to ensure that the prostitutes are not treated as criminals.
When questioned on whether people should have the right to choose, Ali said this is not a trade where people willfully want to become prostitutes.
On the suggestion that legalizing prostitution will result in protection for those involved in the trade, Ali said this is incorrect and she is happy with the stance taken by the Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
