Claims made against recent police traffic operations as money making exercises rather than for safety purposes are being refuted by Director Traffic.
Responding to allegations leveled against “Operation Blitz” currently ongoing around the country, SSP Mahesh Mishra said they have been working around the clock to make our roads safer as we have lost too many lives.
According to police statistics between 1992-2011, 1,451 lives were lost due to road accidents with the majority of victims aged between 21-50 years.
SSP Mishra added over the coming weeks and months, police will be more visibly seen not because they are trying to make more money but they are working in line with Government’s plan to improve road safety.
The current road death toll stands at 37 compared to 46.
It has been recently highlighted that road traffic accidents cost the Fiji economy around $30-$40 million annually.
