Fijians have received an early Christmas present after the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announced they would have an extra month to apply for a bill waiver from the Water Authority of Fiji.
The waiver program was due to come to an end on New Year's Eve, but has now been extended to the 31st of next month.
Commodore Bainimarama said that after Cyclone Evan destroyed the homes and livelihoods of many Fijians, he did not want them to have the added concern of meeting the December 31st deadline.
So far, there have been almost 1,000 successful applications, and a total of $2,615 million in water bill arrears have been forgone.
Schools and religious organizations that have accumulated arrears prior to 2010 will also be eligible under the program.
