Gender equality and violence against women are some of the issues that will be discussed during the first ever Pacific tour of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund, and the United Nations Office for Project Services.
The purpose of the executive board visit is to enhance the board members understanding of the extent and ways in which the United Nations organizations position their engagement with Pacific Island countries and territories.
Fiji’s Permanent Representative to UN Peter Thompson says the Pacific is one of the poorest performers in the world in terms of women representative in Parliament.
Thompson added other issues that will be discussed include poverty reduction, inclusive development, disaster risk management and climate change.
Vice President of the Executive Board of UNDP Tuvako Manongi said this visit is an opportunity for them to hear the perspective of the different Pacific Island countries in relation to the UN assistance.
The team will have a field visit of various UNDP and UNFPA projects in Fiji and Samoa.
Fiji was appointed to the one year chairmanship of the executive board in January this year.
The executive board members will meet government officials and development partners during the tour.
