The starting salary for new intern doctors and nurses at our hospitals is expected to normalize soon.
At the beginning of this year, the pay for new medical interns was put at a lower scale.
The difference for the intern doctors was a reduction of about $2,500.
When questioned on the current situation of their pay, Permanent Secretary for Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand said they had discussions with the Ministry of Health and the matter will be resolved by the commission soon.
Chand said the interns ended up being in a situation where they were bundled up with others in a policy which was introduced earlier this year.
He said medical interns have particular circumstances and their case needs to be treated differently.
Permanent Secretary for Health Dr. Eloni Tora said a PSC circular in relation to the new medical recruits changed this year whereby any new intern will start at the minimum level pay.
He said it is not a pay cut for the new interns as they have just started work but if compared to the pay of the previous interns there is a reduction.
The ministry has left the final assessment and decision to be made by the PSC.
