Asian national gets 7 years for rape

A 47-year-old Asian was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment by Lautoka High Court Judge Sitambaram Thurairaja for raping a 14-year-old girl.

The three assessors in the trial unanimously found the accused guilty on the first count and divided verdict on second count of rape.

Two of the assessors found the accused not guilty for the second count.

However, the court overruled and found the accused guilty on both counts of rape and convicted him accordingly.

Justice Thurairaja said while considering the period in remand and all other circumstances of the accused under the Sentencing and Penalties Decree, he refused to fix a non-parole period.
