Paying bus fares in cash while boarding buses will be a thing of the past as the E-Ticketing System will be fully implemented in the country from April.
Land Transport Authority acting spokesperson Alfred Wiliame said the e-ticketing systems will be used in many buses in the Central Division from this Thursday.
In the Western Division, this system will start from 10th February and it will come into effect from the 20th of February in the North.
Buses around the country will also be accepting cash from passengers allowing everyone to purchase their new smart cards by the end of March.
People have to buy the smart card which is $10 each and will then need to be recharged for bus travel.
These cards would then need to be swiped in buses and you get an instant receipt showing your balance.
Wiliame said the cards that have been manufactured overseas will not only benefit an individual but a family as a whole depending on how people make their travel plans.
Wiliame said from the first week of April, their aim is to completely stop all cash transactions.
When asked whether the system will also be installed in all school buses in the country, Wiliame said LTA is still having talks with the Education Ministry.
