Yet another shocking case has come to light where a 4-year-6-month-old girl was allegedly raped by an 18-year-old in Tavua.
The alleged incident occurred between 3am to 5am yesterday.
The 18-year-old farmer allegedly entered the bedroom window where the children were sleeping.
The mother reported the matter to Police.
More than 50 cases of rape have been reported in just over a month this year and the number continues to rise.
Psychologist Selina Kuruleca said urgent action needs to be taken and people cannot just blame one factor for the increase in the sexual assaults which is mainly done by perpetrators known to the victims.
Kuruleca said all factors need to be considered and there is a need to start perpetrator profiling.
She said people who commit these crimes also need assistance and there is a need to rehabilitate them but Kuruleca agreed that some perpetrators may never change.
Police are also calling for assistance as the Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said a more concerted approach is needed to weed out this social ill.
