Tropical Cyclone Evan is intensifying and is likely to become a category 2 cyclone by the time it enters the Fiji waters.

The Nadi Weather Office confirmed that the tropical cyclone was located 900km East North East of Labasa and is moving closer to Samoa.

If Cyclone Evan maintains its projected track and intensity trend after leaving Samoa, it should move across the northern parts of Tonga on Saturday and arrive into the Fiji waters by Sunday, at least as Category 2 and will have wind speeds between 153 to 177 kilometres per hour.

The Weather Office said ahead of this cyclone, as it heads to Fiji, damaging easterly swells are expected.

This can cause sea flooding of low lying areas.

People are urged to be prepared, heed the warnings and act responsibly.

Meanwhile storm, hurricane and flood warnings have been issued for Samoa as Tropical Cyclone Evan moves closer to the island group.

Cyclone Evan emerged yesterday when a tropical depression deepened 300km southwest of Apia and moved eastward toward the city.

Cyclone Evan has winds of 88 kilometres an hour near its centre, is likely to produce a storm surge of more than three metres and is producing heavy rain.
