The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji said that the Festival of Lights Diwali over the years has become an international festival and today 14 countries give public holiday on Diwali Day.
Vinod Kumar said that when he first came to Fiji, he was surprised to see so many lights on Diwali night which surprised him as it was much more than what they saw in India.
He said that Diwali here seemed like a grand wedding taking place.
He said that he also learned that there are also Diwali light competitions which fascinated him.
Kumar said that people celebrate Diwali for three days in India however in Fiji, people have started using firecrackers from the past two weeks and I-taukei people are also involved in it which he believes is a good thing.
Kumar made the comments at the Diwali celebrations at the India House last night where Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, Anthony Gates, Nazhat Shameem and other guests enjoyed Indian classical songs and dances performed by the students of the Indian Cultural Centre.
