“There should be more women participation in positions of leadership in the Pacific”.
That was the main topic at the panel discussion last night at the USP and UNDP partnership launch which provides a framework on public policy debate.
One of the panelists was the Deputy Speaker of Tonga, Lord Tui Iafitu, he said the current Government in Tonga has only one woman as Minister of Education but there are a few women who have taken up the Chief Executive positions.
He highlighted that women are capable and can compete with men however culture in the Pacific maybe one of the issues that women participation is lacking.
Another panelist, Pricilla Singh, a Coordinator for Local Government said it is a must that women should rise up and take up roles in the pacific parliaments.
Singh at one time was the only woman out of 20 male councilors at the Suva City Council and she said she faced oppositions from the male counterparts but stood firm.
Last night Singh encouraged USP students to engage themselves in leadership programmes as they are Fiji’s future leaders.
The launch last night coincided with International Women’s Day which seeks to emphasize that gender equality is fundamental to advancing human development.
