A Non Government organisation, Fiji Council of Social Services said that the reduction in the Fiji National Provident Fund pensions are causing serious challenges to the senior citizen.
In his 2013 Budget Submission to the government, Executive Director Hassan Khan said that all the people on FNPF Pension of less than $500 per month should be given at least additional $500 as social Pension.
He said that as a token gesture to add meaning to the recently adopted "NATIONAL POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR THE OLDER PERSONS", the 2013 budget should have an universal social pension for all older persons 70 years and over and free medical care at all government hospitals and medical facilities.
He said this will mean a great deal to the rural elderly and strengthen the policy framework.
Meanwhile Khan is also calling on the government to close down the National Centre for Small and Medium Enterprise Development.
According to Khan the Centre has not done anything useful to support and promote the Micro Finance Institutions in Fiji since it was established.
